The subject was born in Bethlehem, New York, the son of the Rev. Joel Squier. About 1845 he moved to Ohio where he became interested in Indian mounds, and in 1847 he co-authored, with Edwin H. Davis, "Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley," the first publication of the Smithsonian Institution. This was followed in 1851 by his own "Aboriginal Monuments of the State of New York." This miniature was a gift to the Society from his nephew.
