This shows the Bonne Homme Richard, under Captain John Paul Jones, engaging the Serapis, Captain Richard Pearson, off Flamborough Head on the east coast of England on September 23, 1779. This encounter, whcih resulted in the capture of the Serapis after a battle of several hours, is one of the famous battles of American naval history.
