Corlies was born in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, and went into business in New York City. In 1875 he became a director of the Bank of America, from 1882-88 he was the vice-president, and from 1888 until his death he served as president. He was also the director of several other banks and insurance companies. This portrait was painted from a photograph decades after his death.
