The subject, a poet and critic, was born in Hartford, Conn., the son of Major Edmund Burke Stedman and Elizabeth Clementine (Dodge) Stedman. He published many volumes of his own poetry and editions of contemporary poetry, among them "The Poetical Works of Edmund Clarence Stedman" (1873) and "A Victorian Anthology, 1837-1895" (1895). This miniature of Stedman was painted by Bentz from a photograph by Pirie MacDonald.
