Dress helmet made of black felt over cork, with peaks in front and back, both angled downward; gilded metal front insignia with shield surmounted by an eagle and "EXCELSIOR" on banner below; braided gold cord draped in front and back; gilded metal buttons, each with crossed cannon in relief and attached hook, at either side; gilded brass spike on ornate foliate base (detached); chin strap missing.
According to the accession records, this helmet was worn by the donor's father, Thomas Henry Barber, while serving as Colonel of the 12th Regiment, National Guard New York (1888-1889).
