Description:
Bronze struck medal with clothed bust of James Buchanan facing right with legend: "JAMES BUCHANAN, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES/1857." Reverse shows the scene of Aesculapus shielding two crew members from death with legend: "TO Dr. FREDERICK ROSE, ASSISTANT SURGEON, ROYAL NAVY, G.B." and inscription below exergual line: "FOR KINDNESS AND HUMANITY/TO OFFICERS AND CREW/OF THE U.S. STEAMER/SUSQUEHANNA."
