The subject was the eldest son of Jonathan Seymour and Maria (Lawrence) Seymour of New York. He received his B.A. from Columbia College in 1826 and became a lawyer. The donor was a classmate of his and in 1851 delivered "An Address on the Character and Talents of the Late Daniel Seymour" to the Column, a literary society at Columbia University.
