Description: 
Chinese export porcelain teacup with blue "Canton" design. Exterior includes landscape with water and pagodas; interior decorated with image of sunset articulated in lines and decorative diaper-pattern and dot border around upper edge.

This cup is part of a 107 piece service of Chinese export porcelain purchased by the donor's great-great grandfather, Gerrit Huybert Van Wagenen (1753-1835), a hardware merchant at Beekman Slip in New York City. Gerrit purchased the service in 1816 for a dinner held for "all the Episcopal clergymen of New York except one." The New-York Historical Society collection includes eight pieces of this service.
