Embroidered silk crazy quilt; 35 central blocks within midnight blue velvet border with embroidered floral motif applied at each corner; consisting of brocade, duchess, faille, taffeta and damasks silks pieced together by multicolored flossed stitching in lazy daisy, herringbone, feather and straight decorative stitching; appliqued and embroidered motifs of insects, flowers bugs and birds; imitation scalloped English bobbin lace ruffle surrounding edge; light brown duchess silk tufted with pink floss backing.
It is unclear which of the three wives of Elbridge Gerry Spaulding (1809-1897) made this quilt. However, most likely it was his third wife, Delia (Strong) Robinson, whom he married in 1854. The accession records indicate that this small quilt was used as a table cover.
