Cradle
Leather-covered pine cradle with edges outlined with brass studs, curved hood with double serpentine-cut front board, and arched foot board; three brass handles, one on either side and one at foot; raised on shaped rockers.
According to the accession records, this cradle belonged to Chancellor Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813) and his family. The Chancellor married Mary Stevens (1752-1814) in 1770. The two had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret Maria Livingston. The leather on the cradle elevated this everyday domestic object into something elegant and worthy of an esteemed and wealthy Hudson Valley family.
