The maker of this handmade corset was the grandmother of the donor. With its low square neckline and gusseted brassiere, the corset mirrors the necklines and tight-fitting bodices fashionable in the first half of the nineteenth century. Its repairs and stains reflect the corset's long history and importance in a woman's wardrobe, as even plain undergarments were much coveted textiles in the nineteenth century.
