The subject was born on Staten Island, the son of William Henry Vanderbilt and Maria Louisa (Kissam) Vanderbilt, and the grandson of his namesake, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. He succeeded his father as head of the Vanderbilt railroad empire, becoming chairman of the board of the New York Central. He built a mansion on Fifth Avenue and another, The Breakers, at Newport, R.I.
