Gallery Label:
The original portrait on which this copy was based was probably painted about 1760-65, most likely in New York. According to family tradition the original was damaged by bayonets during the Revolution, and sometime thereafter this copy was made. The subject is shown against a background that represents his home, Roxborough, which was located on what is now the corner of 18th Street and Park Avenue South.
