Steenwyck, who was born and brought up in Holland, came to New Amsterdam before 1651 and became a prosperous merchant. In 1664 he was one of the Dutch commissioners in the negotiations over Dutch and English claims to New Amsterdam, and when the British took over he maintained the trust of both sides. English governors twice appointed him mayor of the city (1668-70 and 1682-83). In 1674 he was reportedly the second wealthiest man in the colony, second only to Frederick Philipse.
