Black beaver (silk) chapeau with rigid crown; cock and fan edged with floral-patterned black binding and tied together with black ribbon on either side; black silk rosette with superimposed loop of gold metallic cloth tape and gilded metal button embossed with an eagle clutching an anchor within a circle of thirteen stars; gold bullion tassel at each corner; black leather sweatband and black satin lining; in rectangular black painted metal case with hinged lid and handle.
According to the accession records, this chapeau was part of the U.S. Navy dress uniform ca. 1899. Other components of the uniform were also given by the donor.
