A native of Cologne, Germany, Carl Schurz came to the United States in 1852. He was minister to Spain under President Lincoln, and served in the Civil War. After the war he turned to journalism and also returned to politics. He is probably best remembered for his role as secretary of the interior (1877-81) because of his efforts for just treatment of the Indians, a merit civil service program, and national parks.
