Captain Johannes Schuyler (1668-1747) was the sixth and youngest son of Philip Pieterse Schuyler, founder of the Schuyler family in America, and Margarita (Van Slichtenhorst) Schuyler. He married Elizabeth (Staats) Wendell (1659-1737), daughter of Major Abraham Staats and Katrina (Jorhemse) Staats, and widow of Johannes Wendell (1649-1691), on April 25, 1695. From 1703 to 1706 Captain Schuyler was mayor of Albany. This double portrait was a gift to the Society from the subjects' great-great-great-grandson.
