The subject was the fourth son of Merritt Smith Woodhull and Mary (Davis) Woodhull. He was born in Miller's Place, Long Island, entered Yale in 1808 at fifteen, and graduated with honors in 1811. He studied law, served with the New York militia in the War of 1812 and was admitted to the bar in 1817. He was elected mayor of New York in 1849. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his grandson. The Society also owns a number of the family's papers.
