Circular pin-back button, black letters on white ground. "NO / WIDER / WAR" This button refers to a quote from President Johnson in an announcement to the nation after and alleged attack on a U.S. naval vessel in the Gulf of Tonkin, in August, 1964. He said "We still seek no wider war." President Johnson announced to the nation after the Gulf of Tonkin incident in August, 1964 that the U.S. would not rise to the bait after what was considered a provocative attack from Hanoi. Initially the American government claimed that North Vietnamese warships had attacked U.S. vessels in the Gulf, however, it later turned out to be the opposite. The quote acknowledged US participation in military actions, but expresses distaste for further involvement.
