Brooch / pendant
Overall: 2 1/2 x 1 x 1/2 in. ( 6.4 x 2.5 x 1.3 cm )
Gold brooch/pendant set with 14 Montana sapphires (4 dangling, 10 fixed); gold is worked into filigree-type scrolls and soldered with gold balls; 3 gold spear-shaped pendants at bottom.
According to a letter from the donor's attorney (attached to the accession notes), this brooch/pendant (mistakenly called a "lavalière") belonged to Hannah Hoes, the wife and first cousin of President Martin Van Buren, and the first cousin of the donor's grandmother. After Hannah Hoes died in 1819, the pendant was worn by Angelica Singleton Van Buren, niece of Dolly Madison and the President's daughter-in-law, as hostess of White House functions 1837-41. The style suggests a later date.
