Description:
Walnut armchair; back with leather-covered panel attached to oval frame set between ring-and-block-turned stiles that extend below seat rail and attach to diagonal side stretchers; turned and blocked arms; rounded seat with leather-covered panel nailed to top of rail; turned legs, two turned front stretchers, one plain, round stretcher at either side and one plain, round stretcher in back.

According to the accession records, this chair once belonged to Chester A. Arthur, twenty-first president of the United States (1881-1885). Arthur, who died in New York City in 1886, was associated with New York City and State throughout much of his professional life.
