Maple Hitchcock-type side chair painted black with traces of original painted decoration on stiles and back splat; back with squared stiles, turned crest rail with enlarged, cylindrical center, and a single wide, rectangular slat; rush seat; slightly splayed turned front legs with ball feet and rounded rear legs joined by one turned stretcher in front, two plain, round stretchers at either side, and one plain, round stretcher in back.

This type of chair was first mass-produced by Lambert Hitchcock (1795-1852), a chairmaker active near Barkhamsted (later Hitchcockville), Connecticut, in the mid-1820s.
