The New-York Historical Society Education Division provides dynamic programming and curriculum resources for students and teachers in New York and beyond. Historical study sparks curiosity and creativity, promotes cultural understanding, and fosters an empowered citizenry to strengthen our democracy. Our staff of passionate professionals draws on our world-renowned collections to engage learners of all ages in the study of our collective past.

Help New-York Historical Society bring women’s history to life in classrooms across the country!

    

In March 2021, the New-York Historical Society launched an exciting new teacher ambassador program in conjunction with our Women & the American Story (WAMS) curriculum website. WAMS Ambassadors are educators committed to not only incorporating more women’s voices into their own instruction, but also helping other teachers do the same. We are excited to launch the second cohort of this dynamic program.

WAMS Ambassadors will help develop and promote WAMS by providing integral feedback on current and new materials and leading professional development (remote or in-person) designed to bring even more educators and students into contact with the rich resources of our website. Cohort Two of WAMS Ambassadors will run from February 2022 through October 2022.

We are seeking dedicated, passionate, and enthusiastic educators who serve in K-12 classrooms, school/district administrative roles, and/or teacher training positions. Prior expertise in women’s history is not required – we will train you!

WAMS Ambassador Qualities:  

  • Track record of leading effective inquiry-based and primary-source driven lessons.
  • Demonstrated commitment to bringing diverse and culturally responsive histories into the classroom.
  • Experience leading professional development in your school or other network.
  • Access to (or willingness to quickly build) a network of educators beyond a single school.
  • Interest in museum education, curriculum development, and public history.
  • Unwavering love of history education, even when that history is difficult or unfamiliar.
  • Passion for American women’s history.

WAMS Ambassador Responsibilities:

  • Participate in 10 hours of synchronous and asynchronous professional development provided by New-York Historical Society.
  • Provide feedback on WAMS materials through focus groups and e-mail questionnaires.
  • Organize, plan, and deliver 2 professional development sessions for teachers in your region focused on bringing WAMS into the classroom between May 16, 2022 and September 30, 2022.
    • Sessions should extend beyond your school and tap into a wider teacher network.
  • Specialize in one of four content areas  -- Early Colonial Period and Settler Colonialism; Antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction; Jazz Age, Great Depression, and WWII; and Cold War, Civil Rights, and Women’s Liberation.
    • Applicants will be able to indicate their specialization preferences.
  • Be a champion of women’s history in your classroom and in your community. Actively remind the students and educators in your life that Women’s History is American History!

WAMS Ambassador Benefits:

  • $1,500 stipend distributed in two halves.
  • 10 hours of professional development training, led by experienced museum educators, and featuring scholars from New-York Historical Society’s Center for Women’s History and curriculum writers for the Women & the America Story curriculum.
    • Training will cover culturally responsive, inquiry-based pedagogy techniques; women’s history content; and professional development best practices.
  • $150 in materials to support your work as a women’s history teacher leader, including reading materials and WAMS-branded swag!
  • Networking in a cohort of outstanding teacher leaders who are equally passionate about women’s history and improving Social Studies instruction.
  • Mentorship from N-YHS staff with extensive experience leading PD and exploring women’s history.

WAMS Ambassador Timeline:

  • Applications Due: January 3, 2022
  • Interviews with Select Candidates: Begin January 17, 2022
  • Final Decisions Announced: February 4, 2022
  • N-YHS-led Training: February – May 2022
  • WAMS Ambassador feedback on WAMS Content: February – September 2022
  • WAMS Ambassador-led Professional Development: May – September 2022
