Thomas Fortune and Ida B. Wells fought against voter intimidation and discrimination. Explore a copy of the literacy test used to prevent thousands of Black Americans from voting. Then, discuss with educators and your family the impact of voter suppression, both in the past and today.

Meet activist Sylvia Rivera, as portrayed by actor, artist, and educator Summer Minerva. A veteran of the Stonewall uprising in 1969 and an advocate for anyone marginalized by the gay rights movement, Sylvia tirelessly raised her voice in defense of the rights of people of color and low-income queer and transgender people. Listen as Sylvia reflects on Stonewall, witness a retelling of one of her speeches, and then ask your very own questions about her life.

Take a virtual field trip to Genesee Country Village & Museum—the largest and most comprehensive living history museum in New York State—to explore how some African American New Yorkers would have celebrated the end of slavery. Living History Coordinator Cheyney McKnight, along with Historical Helper Millen Shiffer, prepare a celebration feast on a wood burning stove in one of the historic buildings at GCVM. Learn how to make treats like strawberry pie, sweet tea, and other kid-friendly recipes.
