Falconer, a New York City hardware merchant, was a skilled amateur painter and printmaker, as well as a collector who enjoyed a wide friendship among artists, including Thomas Cole. Falconer remained close to Cole's family after the artist died in 1848. Several decades later, Falconer painted a pair of charming oil studies at Catskill of Cole's Cedar Grove studio. He also produced an etching of this view to illustrate an 1885 article in the Century Magazine titled "The Summer Haunts of American Artists," suggesting that the Catskill studio was still a pilgrimatge site long after the artist's death. Cedar Grove can be visited today as a National Historic Site located just across the Hudson River from Frederic Church's House, Olana.
