The planned garden suburb is a phenomenon that originated in England in the late-18th century, then quickly spread to the United States and beyond in the 19th. Renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern discusses the evolution of these bucolic settings and the important lessons they hold for the future of our towns and cities.

Robert A.M. Stern is the founding partner of Robert A.M. Stern Architects and Dean of the Yale School of Architecture. He is the principal author of the monumental five-volume history of architecture and urban design in New York City, culminating with New York 2000, and is co-author of Paradise Planned: The Garden Suburb and the Modern City.
