Pewter struck medal with obverse showing busts of Columbus, at left, and Washington, at right, flanking American eagle atop shield with stars and stripes, supporting scroll inscribed: "WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION" with dates below: "1892" and "1893"; upper section of field depicts scene with legend above: "SIGNING OF DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE"; date below: "JULY 4TH 1776"; legend at lower center: "CHICAGO." Reverse depicts two vignettes: upper section of field shows Columbus and his crew praying in front of crucifix; legend above: "DISCOVERY OF AMERICA"; date on scroll below scene: "October 1492"; lower section of field depicts group of first European settlers at seashore with sailing ship in distance; legend below: "LANDING OF THE PILGRIMS"; date in exergue: "DEC. 1620."
