A native of New London, Connecticut, the subject graduated from Yale in 1874 and went on to attend Columbia Law School. He practiced law in New York for many years until he was appointed clerk of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Second District, which included New York, Vermont, and Connecticut. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his sister.
