Gallery Label:
Murphy operated a sailmaking and marine supply business on South Street in New York City. He served as a city fire warden for over ten years, as an alderman, and as a trustee of the Public School Society of New York. He was a member of the New York City Anti-Slavery Society and contributed generously to the Union cause during the Civil War. A number of his business and personal papers are in the Society's manuscript collection.
