Description:
Wrought silver trophy or presentation cup; narrow, urn-shaped cup applied to a circular, stepped and domed foot with a bulbous pedestal and reeded footring; reeded band applied around the rim; two squared strap handles with a raised midband applied to opposite sides of the body; body engraved, "TOWNSEND LAWRENCE/ FROM/ TROOP-A-U*S*V*" on one side and, "A/ USV" around crossed swords above, "SEPT. 24, 1912." on the other, all in block letters; maker's marks stamped on the base.
Gallery Label:
This cup was presented to Townsend Lawrence (1870-1951) on his wedding day as a gift from the U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, of which Lawrence was a member. Townsend Lawrence married Herminia Barnes (d. 1913) on September 24, 1912.
