Wrought silver and tortoise shell tobacco box; brown and yellow American box turtle shell (terrapene carolina) base with an applied, molded silver band around the edges; semi-circular side (at the head) engraved, "S S" surrounded by engraved decoration; hinged cover secured at the head end and engraved with the Salisbury family coat-of-arms, a shield with a crowned lion rampant surrounded by three crescents, shield surrounded by foliate scrolls and surmounted by an armor helmet and a crowned lion rampant holding a crescent in its raised paw; edge of cover engraved with a decorative band; no maker's marks.
