framed: 16 3/4 x 52 7/8 x 2 in. ( 42.5 x 134.3 x 5.1 cm )
underglaze: in upper right corner of obverse: "NIEUW / AMSTERDAM / A. D. 1656"
Mural composed of thirty tin-glazed earthenware tiles with blue and white "delft" decoration; view of shoreline with linear border; cartouche in the form of a scroll with inscription, "NIEUW AMSTERDAM A. D. 1656," in upper right corner; brown-painted wooden frame.
This view of New Amsterdam is loosely based on a bird's eye view that appeared on an engraved map of New Netherlands published by Adriaen van der Donck in 1656. This mural was probably inspired by a variation of van der Donck's view published in Valentine's Manual in 1852 or in Harper's Magazine in 1893.
