This view of New Amsterdam is loosely based on a bird's eye view that appeared on an engraved map of New Netherlands published by Adriaen van der Donck in 1656. This mural was probably inspired by a variation of van der Donck's view published in Valentine's Manual in 1852 or in Harper's Magazine in 1893.
