handwritten in pencil: on envelope in which straps were found: "Gift of Mr. Louis C. Wills / 26 Court St / Bklyn 12 / 1948.20 / 2 epaulets (presumably as Major) / of Anthony Wills / (Cap, sash & sword of Anthony Wills / has previously been given to NYHS).
Pair of officer's shoulder straps, each rectangular with two gold embroidered maple leaves on blue velvet ground inside gold embroidered border.
A note found with these shoulder straps indicates that they belonged to Anthony Wills, who served in the Brooklyn-based 28th Regiment of Infantry, New York State Militia, during and after the Civil War. Wills, the father of the donor, was commissioned a captain on February 20, 1863, and promoted to major on December 6, 1871.
