Description: 
Shako with rigid, angled, cylindrical crown made of dark blue wool felt-covered cardboard; black leather top, visor, and chinstrap, the latter joined at either side by a brass button with shield-breasted eagle in relief.
Gallery Label: 
William C. Dare is first listed as a hatter in Philadelphia directories in 1861. In 1860, he had received a contract for 15,000 U.S. Army hats; he had a contract for 40,000 in 1861, and a subsequent contract for 1,452 Light Artillery caps in 1864.
