Gallery Label:
A native of England, Miller came to America in 1845 and from then until his death he lived mainly in New York. He was a prolific landscape painter in watercolor, and he also produced numerous pen and ink sketches for illustrated publications. In this self-portrait he is pictured sketching in one of his favorite haunts at Weehawken on the New Jersey shore of the Hudson River.
