The subject was the son of James E. Shaw of New York, and was co-proprietor of the Grand Union Hotel at 42nd Street and Park Avenue for over thirty years. He was an art patron who not only collected paintings but also sponsored prizes awarded at the Salmagundi Club and the National Academy of Design. The Society owns the Samuel T. Shaw Memorial Collection which relates to the Grand Union Hotel, the Salmagundi Club, the Amateur Fencers League of America, and the New York Athletic Club.
