Square cotton stitched "marking" or "alphabet" sampler stitched in brown and green cotton thread; horizontal rows of five alphabets (one stitched in eyelet stitch) numbers, diamond design of queen's stitch and signed with date "1821" and name and age, "Lucy Cole's Work Aged 12 Years"; horizontal rows separated by straightline rows of cross-stitching and bordered a simple sawtooth cross-stitch pattern; stitches include cross, eyelet, and queen's.
Lucy Cole lived on Greenwich Avenue in Manhattan and married Abraham Ackerman at the Dutch Reformed Church in 1833.
