The subject, the son of Christian Schell and Elizabeth (Hughes) Schell, was active as a jeweller in New York from 1844 until 1872. He served as the second president of the Bank of the Metropolis from 1872 to 1894 and as director of the New York and Harlem Railroad Company. Schell became a member of N-YHS in 1848 and was a life member and treasurer from 1885 until his death. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his daughter-in-law.
