The subject was the fifth son of William Cutting and Gertrude (Livingston) Cutting and the grandson of the Rev. Leonard Cutting. He became a stockbroker with offices on William Street and was a member of the New York Stock Exchange. This pastel portrait was based on an earlier photograph by Napoleon Sarony. Juliana Cutting, former owner of this work, was the subject's granddaughter.
