The subject graduated from the General Theological Seminary in New York in 1836 and was ordained in the same year as a Protestant Episcopal deacon. After his ordination he went to Missouri as a missionary working among the Indians and the few white settlers at Boonville where he established a congregation. He later served as rector of Christ Church, St. Louis, and Christ Church, Pensacola, Florida. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his granddaugther.
