Description:
Silver-plated baby rattle with two tiers of bells, whistle at top and smooth piece of coral at bottom; foliate repoussé design on body of rattle and on bells.

Children's rattles were often worn around their necks, suspended from ribbons or chains, to keep them from being damaged. Made of silver or gold, the rattles were fitted with a whistle at one end, a smooth piece of coral suitable to teething, and any number of bells to ring.
