Dwight David Eisenhower, "Ike", (1890-1969) -- Republican; general in the U.S. Army during World War II; President of the United States, 1953-61; President of Columbia University 1948-53; and from 1971 to 1978, his portrait appeared on the U.S. dollar coin.
