Thomas Edmund Dewey (1902-1971) of Pawling, Dutchess County, N.Y.; Republican. U.S. District Attorney for the Southern District of New York, 1933; candidate for Republican nomination for President, 1940; Governor of New York, 1943-55; defeated, 1938; candidate for President of the United States, 1944, 1948. Earl Warren (1891-1974), member of Republican National Committee from California, 1936-38; California state attorney general, 1939-43; Governor of California, 1943-53; candidate for Vice President of the United States, 1948; and Chief Justice of U.S. Supreme Court, 1953-69.
