Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005) was elected to the New York General Assembly in 1964 and served until 1968. In 1968 she was elected to New York's Twelfth Congressional District becoming the first African American woman in Congress. Chisholm served two terms in Congress being re-elected into office in 1970. In 1972 she announced her candidacy for the Presidency, receiving 151 of the democratic delegate votes. She served in the House of Representatives until 1982.
