Description:
Soft, brimless dark blue wool felt cap with a bright medium blue band with five horizontal stripes surrounding lower edge, and a circular red patch with "V/NG" embroidered in gold attached in front; chin strap of fine gold cord with two slides; gilded metal buttons embossed with initials "NG" secure chin strap at either side; quilted black silk lining.
Gallery Label:
The cap, which was part of the uniform of the Veteran Corps of the 7th Regiment, National Guard New York, was worn by Lt.-Colonel George Stevens Schermerhorn (1835-1926). Various related uniform parts and accessories are also in the N-YHS Collection.
