Wood fragment with accompanying hand-written letter and wrapper.

According to the wrapper and letter accompanying this piece, H.M. S. Somerset was wrecked near Cape Cod in October 1778. A Provincetown fisherman found the piece at low tide in 1888, gave it to Mr. Lester F. Clark of Worcester, MA, who gave it to Mr. Arthur E. Nelson. One piece was donated to the American Antiquarian Society and this piece to the Naval History Society in 1927.
