Hoffman, the sculptor, was a good friend of the subject (née Rita de Acosta), and wrote of her in her book, "Heads and Tales" (1936, p. 68): "She had always attracted me as an exotic and fascinating personality, the perfect hostess who knew the art of making each guest feel himself the special attraction of the evening. No dull moment was ever permitted in her brilliant salons, at which were gathered together the various leaders of the intelligentsia, musicians, poets, and artists of her time."
