Elizabeth Gatfield was the wife of Leonard Rogers of New York. Judging by the style of the dress and hat she wears, her portrait must have been painted about 1785-90. The painting, a gift to the Society from the subject's great-great-grandson, represents a survival of the provincial Georgian-rococo style in the aftermath of the Revolutionary War.
