Description: 
Carved, hinged daguerreotype case with interior clasp closing device; the same oval image appears on both sides, depicting a Civil War battleship at sea; the image is set against six vertical rectangular arabesque panels, and all four sides are surrounded with a floral design.
Gallery Label: 
This case depicts the Monitor, a heavily armored warship formerly used in coastal operations. This type of ship had a very low freeboard and a revolving gun turret.
