This collection of military buttons was assembled by Adam W. Spies in 1826, from the buttons of various manufacturers in Birmingham, England, when he was starting his career as a military goods and hardware importer. He emigrated to New York City around 1832. According to an article in "Just Buttons" magazine, this collection is "probably the most important documentation of American buttons produced in Birmingham, England so far known."
